FRANK SINATRA
Frank Sinatra was undoubtedly one of the world’s best singers, an absolute mega-star in music and film. He was born into a family of Italian immigrants. Although his career repeatedly encountered crises, by the middle of his career he was considered a living legend.
Frank Sinatra achieved solo success after he signed with Columbia Records in 1943, becoming the idol of die-hard pop fans known as bobby soxers. It is a term from the 1940s/50s, describing highly emotional female fans of pop music, admirers of singers such as Frank Sinatra, Frankie Avalon or Elvis Presley. They were usually teenage girls, relatively young women, between the ages of 12 and 25. They wore flared skirts and characteristically rolled up socks.
As you may not know, Sinatra led a very successful career as an actor. His performance in From Here to Eternity earned him an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor. He also appeared in various musicals winning another Golden Globe for Buddy Joey. On television, meanwhile, he contributed from the early 1950s on The Frank Sinatra Show on the ABC station, and appeared more widely on other television channels throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Together with Dean Martin, Sammy Davise Jr. and other stars, Sinatra formed the legendary Rat Pack – a group of friends who performed together on stage (mainly in Vegas), in films, but also partying and gambling together. Sinatra was also heavily involved in politics and actively campaigned for presidents such as Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan. Sinatra was also inspected by the FBI during this time, and this was due to his alleged association with the Mafia. This was never proven. Sinatra always denied he was connected to the mob.
Although Sinatra never learned to read music, he understood it perfectly and worked very hard from an early age to improve his skills in all musical aspects. He was a perfectionist, known for his stylish wardrobe and performances. He always insisted on recording his music live with his band. His bright blue eyes earned him the popular nickname “Ol’ Blue Eyes”. Sinatra had a colourful personal life and was often involved in stormy relationships with women, for example with his second wife Ava Gardner. He later married Mia Farrow in 1966 and Barbara Marks in 1976. Sinatra had several violent confrontations, usually with journalists who he felt had overstepped the bounds of good taste or worked for people with whom the artist disagreed.
Sinatra retired for the first time in 1971, but returned to the stage two years later. He recorded several albums and resumed performing at Caesars Palace, and released the ever-popular and iconic song New York, New York in 1980. Using his Las Vegas shows as an artistic base, Sinatra toured both in the United States and internationally until shortly before his death in 1998.
